Building Peaceful Communities Through Dialogue and Action: Sozo Community Centre at the 16 Days of Activism Campaign

As part of the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, Sozo Community Centre was honoured to participate in a community engagement programme hosted by uMshwathi Local Municipality. The event brought together community members, local leaders, stakeholders, and advocacy organizations to address the ongoing challenges of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and explore practical solutions for creating safer, more peaceful communities.

Creating a Platform for Community Voices

The 16 Days of Activism campaign serves as a reminder that the fight against violence requires ongoing commitment from every sector of society. During the engagement, Sozo Community Centre facilitated discussions that encouraged community members to openly share their experiences, concerns, and challenges related to Gender-Based Violence, family conflict, substance abuse, youth vulnerability, and community safety.

The session created a safe and inclusive environment where residents felt empowered to speak about the issues affecting their daily lives and contribute ideas towards positive change.

Education as a Tool for Prevention

A key focus of the programme was educating community members about Gender-Based Violence, its impact on individuals and families, and the importance of prevention through awareness and community involvement.

Participants were encouraged to:

  • Recognize the signs of abuse and violence.
  • Understand the rights of women and children.
  • Access available support services and reporting mechanisms.
  • Promote healthy relationships based on respect and equality.
  • Take responsibility for creating safer spaces within their communities.

Through interactive discussions and community participation, the event highlighted that education remains one of the most powerful tools in preventing violence and breaking cycles of abuse.

Listening to Community Concerns

Beyond raising awareness, Sozo Community Centre placed significant emphasis on listening to the voices of the community. Residents shared concerns ranging from domestic violence and youth-related challenges to social issues that contribute to conflict and instability.

By engaging directly with community members, the organization was able to gain valuable insights into the realities faced by local families and identify opportunities for collaboration between communities, local government, and support organizations.

Working Together for Solutions

Building peaceful communities requires more than awareness—it requires action. Throughout the engagement, participants worked together to identify practical solutions that can strengthen community cohesion and reduce violence.

Discussions focused on:

  • Strengthening support systems for vulnerable individuals.
  • Encouraging community-led interventions.
  • Promoting positive parenting and family support.
  • Increasing access to counselling and social services.
  • Creating opportunities for youth development and empowerment.
  • Fostering partnerships between community organizations and local government.

These conversations reinforced the belief that sustainable change is possible when communities unite around a common vision of safety, dignity, and respect for all.

A Shared Commitment to Peace

Sozo Community Centre extends its sincere appreciation to uMshwathi Local Municipality for creating a platform that allowed meaningful dialogue and community participation during the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

The event demonstrated that when communities are given the opportunity to speak, be heard, and work together, they become active partners in building solutions that promote peace and social wellbeing.

As the campaign continues, Sozo Community Centre remains committed to advocating for the rights of women and children, supporting vulnerable communities, and contributing to the creation of safer, stronger, and more peaceful societies.

Together, we can break the cycle of violence, restore hope, and build communities where every person can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
