Empowering Communities Through Education: Msunduzi Local Municipality GBV Awareness Programme

In a united effort to address the growing challenge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Msunduzi Local Municipality, in partnership with the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) and Sozo Community Centre, hosted an educational awareness programme aimed at empowering community members with knowledge, support, and practical information on reporting Gender-Based Violence.

Held as part of the broader 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, the programme brought together residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to engage in meaningful conversations about one of South Africa’s most pressing social issues.

Education as a Catalyst for Change

Gender-Based Violence affects individuals, families, and entire communities. Recognizing that awareness and education are key to prevention, the programme focused on providing participants with a deeper understanding of GBV, its causes, its impact, and the role every citizen can play in creating safer communities.

Facilitators guided discussions that encouraged open dialogue and community participation, helping attendees better understand the importance of standing against violence and promoting a culture of respect, equality, and accountability.

Understanding Reporting Channels and Support Services

A critical aspect of the programme was educating community members about the various channels available for reporting incidents of Gender-Based Violence.

Participants received information on:

  • How and where to report cases of abuse and violence.
  • The role of law enforcement and support services.
  • Accessing counselling and victim support programmes.
  • Community resources available to survivors.
  • The importance of speaking out and seeking assistance.

By equipping individuals with this knowledge, the programme aimed to remove barriers that often prevent victims and witnesses from reporting abuse and accessing the help they need.

Strengthening Community Awareness

The engagement highlighted the importance of community involvement in combating Gender-Based Violence. Participants were encouraged to become advocates for change within their own families, workplaces, schools, and neighbourhoods.

Through interactive discussions and group participation, community members explored ways to:

  • Challenge harmful social norms.
  • Support survivors with dignity and compassion.
  • Promote gender equality.
  • Encourage positive conflict resolution.
  • Build safer and more inclusive communities.

The programme reinforced the message that ending Gender-Based Violence is not solely the responsibility of institutions but requires collective action from every member of society.

Partnership for Social Change

The collaboration between Msunduzi Local Municipality, the Commission for Gender Equality, and Sozo Community Centre demonstrated the power of partnership in addressing complex social challenges.

By combining resources, expertise, and community outreach efforts, the organizations created a platform where people could learn, share experiences, and gain access to valuable information that empowers them to become part of the solution.

Moving Forward Together

As South Africa continues its fight against Gender-Based Violence, initiatives such as this serve as an important reminder that education remains one of the strongest tools for prevention and empowerment.

Sozo Community Centre remains committed to working alongside government institutions, community organizations, and local stakeholders to ensure that communities are informed, supported, and equipped to respond to violence and injustice.

Together, through awareness, education, and action, we can build communities where women, children, and all individuals can live free from fear and violence.

Every voice matters. Every action counts. Every community has a role to play in ending Gender-Based Violence.
