Walk for HER

On a powerful day in the heart of Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, community members, local organizations, leaders, women, men, and young people came together with one shared purpose: to raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and advocate for the safety and protection of women and children.

Led by Sozo Community Centre, in partnership with several community organizations and stakeholders, the “Walk for HER” awareness march transformed the streets of Edendale into a platform for hope, education, and unity.

A Community United for Change

Gender-Based Violence remains one of the most pressing social challenges facing South Africa. Every day, countless women and children experience abuse, discrimination, and violence that leave lasting physical and emotional scars. Recognizing the urgent need for action, Sozo Community Centre organized this awareness walk to encourage open conversations, educate communities, and inspire collective responsibility.

Participants marched proudly along the main road of Edendale carrying banners and messages of support, demonstrating that violence has no place in our homes, schools, workplaces, or communities. The event created a visible and powerful statement that survivors are not alone and that communities can play a significant role in preventing abuse.

Giving a Voice to the Vulnerable

The Walk for HER campaign was more than a march—it was a call to action.

Throughout the event, participants highlighted the importance of:

  • Protecting women and children from violence and abuse.
  • Encouraging victims and survivors to seek help and support.
  • Promoting healthy relationships built on respect and equality.
  • Educating young people about their rights and responsibilities.
  • Building safer communities through collaboration and awareness.

By bringing these messages directly into public spaces, the march helped shine a light on issues that are often hidden behind closed doors.

The Role of Sozo Community Centre

Sozo Community Centre continues to play a vital role in community development and social upliftment throughout the region. Through advocacy programs, educational initiatives, community outreach, and support services, the organization remains committed to creating positive change and empowering vulnerable individuals and families.

The Walk for HER event reflects Sozo’s ongoing mission to foster a community where every person—especially women and children—can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination.

Strength Through Partnership

One of the most inspiring aspects of the event was the collaboration between multiple organizations, community groups, and local stakeholders. Their combined efforts demonstrated that addressing Gender-Based Violence requires a united approach.

When communities work together, awareness grows, support networks strengthen, and lasting change becomes possible.

Moving Forward

While the walk may have lasted only a few hours, its message will continue long after the banners have been packed away. Every conversation started, every person educated, and every survivor encouraged to seek help represents another step toward a safer and more compassionate society.

Sozo Community Centre extends its gratitude to all organizations, volunteers, participants, and community members who joined the Walk for HER initiative. Together, we are sending a clear message:

Enough is enough. Our women matter. Our children matter. Our communities matter.

By standing together, speaking out, and taking action, we can help build a future free from Gender-Based Violence.
